About.

From his many years with Tallahassee rock legends The Casual Ts (including a cameo and song in the award-winning independent film Ruby in Paradise) to many sessions and live performances ranging from the avant-garde to musical theater to his 21st Century stints as frontman for Tampa Bay bands The Smoking Jackets, Silent Jones, and since 2014, Botomatics, Bob Anthony has found many a platform for his command of and love for several musical styles, prompting Creative Pinellas to proclaim him “One of our best local singer-songwriters.”.

In between his many projects, Anthony has focused much of his manic-yet-graceful energy on solo performances.  On his own, Anthony calls upon his chameleonic musical tendencies at will; from the retroish pop-n-roll of “Move Me Once Again” and “Rose Coloured World” to epic story-songs such as “Real” and “May 9.” His forte, though, may be the many instrumental flavors that spice a solo performance, whether haunting and atmospheric (“Book of Tides”), rousing and ragtimey (“Daily Rag”) or  full of dense textures and free improvisations {“The Great Upstairs“).  Several of these pieces are collected on the all-instrumental “Anthonology” CD, which Focus called “a real treat for guitar lovers.”  Anthony also likes to throw in a few “songs he’d wished he’d written” to answer the dreaded “Hey, man, play something we know!” plea. .

The Largo native has graced many stages throughout the Tampa Bay area as well as other points throughout the southeast and beyond, opened for national acts such as Slobberbone, Kevn Kinney (Drivin’ and Cryin’), Alejandro Escovedo, David Dondero, Alex Chilton, The Replacements, and many others over the past 35 years, played alongside Florida roots-rock legend Charlie Pickett, Acho Brother, SHIM, and others, and has received considerable airplay on Tampa’s WMNF-FM 88.5 and Tallahassee’s WVFS-FM 89.7 as well as other discerning radio stations in the Southeast.  Focus lauds Anthony’s “guitar mastery and classic songwriting smarts” while the Tallahassee Democrat calls his music “intricately beautiful…to watch him play is to be fascinated and ultimately enchanted.”  The Tampa Bay Times is more blush-inducing, referring to Anthony as “a great live performer…if it seems like (he) can do it all, it’s because he can,” Creative Pinellas points to him as “one of our best local singer-songwriters,“ while Connect Savannah is bucking for a spot on Anthony’s payroll by simply calling him “hellaciously talented.”  Anthony himself grunts and glares at such talk, preferring to spend his time working and practicing, watching documentaries, junk-shopping and attempting to re-channel the “radio dreams, far, far away” that flooded his youth.  In the meantime he wants to get some new songs recorded and play lots of shows……………

Hot ticket: A grooving soiree at the Emerald

By GINA VIVINETTO, Times Pop Music Critic

Bob Anthony is a great live performer, whether it's with his band the Smoking Jackets, or a solo gig, like the Emerald Bar's much ballyhooed Holiday Soiree this weekend in downtown St. Petersburg.

Anthony, from Largo, just released Lines, packed with retro Buddy Holly-style rock, a bit of blue-eyed soul and dazzling pop.

If it seems like Anthony can do it all, it's because he can. Even an eloquent cover of Nick Drake's Bryter Layter.

BOB ANTHONY: ANTHONOLOGY (SMOKING JACKETS) A; THE SMOKING JACKETS: LINES (SMOKING JACKETS) A-

Tampa area musician Anthony shows his prowess on two EPs, one of guitar instrumentals, one of rollicking rock.  ``Anthonology'' was recorded sporadically over the past 11 years and it's just about perfect. Anthony is so skilled in the acoustic music idiom one would think his attempts to rock would suffer.  One would be wrong. ``Lines'' is loose, inspired rock 'n' roll, on which Anthony proves he's as adept with his pen as with his guitar pick.  Anthony performs tonight at Sacred Grounds Coffeehouse; see Concerts, Page 20; CDs available in Tampa area independent record stores, at his shows or by sending an e-mail to bobbya335@yahoo.com.

Hey, if anyone is looking to hire a solo instrumentalist for a chic event, Bob Anthony is your guy. Bob provided the perfect ambience for our Open House/Art Exhibit last night at Project Return. Ever so tasty, Bob is fluidly eclectic, mixing jazz, rock, and world influences, seamlessly, into a unique sound suitable for the classiest of occasions. Highly Recommended***** -Michael Hilson, Program Manager, Project Return
